SALFORD UNIVERSITY RING MAIN

We were introduced to this project by one of our hydraulic partners. They had the required hydraulic equipment and Halex had the required experience to implement this and combine it with a state of the art control system suitable for a modern technology institution.

The scope at a glance -

  • Specification of sensors

  • Design and build of both remote and local HMI control panels.

  • Programming of control software including -

    • HMI formatting.

    • Condition monitoring circuits.

    • Safety alert readouts.

    • E-stop implementation.

UNIVERSITY BUILDING

Salford University broke ground on its new  Science, Engineering and Environment building in July 2020 with an expected completion of September 2022. This £65mil structure at the heart of the Peel Park campus was to be a hub for discovery and innovation. Work on the Hydraulic ring main was started late into construction so on time delivery was critical to ensure the overall project was completed on time.

  • Operator training.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

The system consisted of two main pump motors as well as two ancillary pump motors, a cooling fan motor and an accumulator. Also included was a custom suite of sensors and associated alarm pages to allow for easy diagnosis and condition monitoring. The control panels (Both local and remote) containing all the required circuitry were manufactured in house then fitted and commissioned by our experienced on site operatives.

HMI INTERFACE

Being on a University Campus the requirements for this ring main differed somewhat from your run of the mill industrial hydraulic system. The system needed to be easily operable by personnel with minimal hydraulic experience and operated from multiple locations depending on the functions in use. Halex designed a bespoke interface with simplified control options for normal use. If needed, behind this was a maintenance level readout allowing for access to more detailed information, up to 48 alarm pages and various direct sensor read outs.
