HALEX ENGINEERING
CHATHAM LOCK GATE DRIVE SYSTEM
This wide ranging turn key project was one of our favourites! Giving us a chance to show our full breadth of Engineering knowledge and resource the handover was completed on time allowing this critical piece of maritime infrastructure to function for many years to come.
The scope at a glance -
-
Demolition of existing system.
-
Design and verification of new mechanical drive system.
-
Manufacture of frame structure.
-
Overhaul of existing HPU’s.
-
Implementation of new electrohydraulic control system.
-
Full commissioning of system.
-
Operator training.
LOCK GATE
The gate itself is around 30m in length and 4m wide. The basin behind it is capable of accommodating vessels in excess of 120m in length making this port a critical piece of UK infrastructure for bulk carriers just a stones throw away from the busiest shipping lane in the world.

NEW DRIVE SYSTEM STRUCTURE
The existing drive system structure was below ground level leaving critical electrical, hydraulic and mechanical components in a highly saline environment which caused issues with both corrosion and reliability. Our in house designed and verified framework allowed for key drive system elements to be brought above ground for ease of maintenance and increased service life.

CUSTOM CONTROL SYSTEM
The revised drive specification necessitated a completely new control system, accounting for new sensors, safety protocols and operational procedures. Our controls team put together a bespoke hardware package and customised HMI interface which includes radio remote operation and desktop remote access for distant operation and performance tracking over time.
